With the mission of “Changing the Meat We Eat”, Applegate inspires people to think about where their food comes from, how it is raised, and how it is made.

In 1987, Applegate’s founder, Stephen Mcdonnell, asked a simple question. He wondered “what if you weren’t afraid to read a hot dog ingredient label?”

Since then, Applegate has developed a comprehensive product line including antibiotic-free deli meat, organic deli meat,100% grass fed beef, and other non-GMO items. Their goal is to have all products be non-GMO by the end of 2020.

Applegate believes the way food is raised can transform and improve lives. The company is a major proponent of animal welfare, and they commit to handling their animals with care and respect. Their humane practices include giving animals sufficient space to move around, providing environments for animals to express themselves, and keeping animals well fed and with access to fresh water. Additionally, the company maintains a strong commitment to improving the health and nutrition of school-aged children. On their blog, Applegate devotes an entire section to kid-friendly recipes, from colorful salads to “clean conscience” sandwiches.

In 2019, Applegate announced a partnership with After-School All-Stars (ASAS) , a free program that helps kids thrive in life and school. Throughout this program, children learn lessons ranging from fitness to healthy eating. The program also partners with Minor League Baseball, and ASAS students are treated to a “fun, authentic summer experience created just for them” by attending a minor league game.
